My 4100 / 4500 series lock "Residency / Privacy" functions are operating in reverse (entering Residency Mode or Privacy Mode when the bolt is retracted instead of extended, and vice versa). I think I installed the "deadbolt position monitor" incorrectly. How can I fix this?
A "deadbolt position monitor", shown in the image below, monitors the position of the deadbolt, i.e. either extended or retracted. Its general purpose, when the lock is programmed correctly, is to place the lock into or out of Residency Mode or Privacy Mode. Although this mechanism is installed correctly at the factory, it is possible for installers to remove it and re-install it incorrectly. This Tech Tip is intended to describe its operation, when to recognize the abnormal lock operation that results from its incorrect installation, and how to re-install it correctly.
When a 4100 / 4500 series lock is installed, the spindle that passes through the door will also pass through this "deadbolt position monitor" located on the inside housing. When rotated, this "deadbolt position monitor" operates a micro switch located just above the rotating monitor unit.
If the position indicator unit is mis-installed, the micro switch will not engage when necessary, resulting in the lock's "Residency / Privacy" functions operating in reverse (entering Residency Mode or Privacy Mode when the bolt is retracted instead of extended, and vice versa).
The fix is fairly simple, as the only thing that is required is to simply rotate the monitor unit until the groove is facing up (this hump must face the micro switch, as shown in the above image).
With the monitor unit rotated to the correct position, the micro switch will then correctly monitor the position of the deadbolt as intended by the lock firmware programming.
