My SQL Express 2012 installation resulted in a "Fusion Active Template Library (ATL)" failed status. What can I do?

If an SQL Express 2012 installation results in a "Fusion Active Template Library (ATL)" failed status, proceed as follows:

1. Update the MS Windows operating system, ensuring all cumulative updates for SQL are included.  The most recent update for SQL Express 2012 is Build 11.0.2424.0 (refer to Microsoft article, here).
   
   
2. Restart the installation PC after the update (note that additional restarts may be required).
   
   
3. After the update is completed, run the SQL Express .EXE installer included with the DL- Windows installation files. Select the x86 or x64 file, as follows:

• SQLEXPR32_x86_ENU.EXE - (32-bit version of SQL Express for a PC running a 32-bit Operating system)
• SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.EXE - (64-bit version of SQL Express for a PC running a 64-bit Operating System)

The above steps will clear all SQL installation issues.
